It wasn't too hard to decide what sculpting project I wanted to start from the Creepy Series. The color and the depth in the original Basil Gogos painting just pops. I studied the painting, the red-orange back drop just makes the figures pop out. What a great composition. Below I will just pick out the figures that I did piece by piece.
The lady in the evening gown: The biggest challenge on the model was the candelabra, I had to use wire and then get sculpty on that tubing. I took a bit of liberty on the front of the dress with fringe. The necklace and earrings were not as hard as I thought they would be. The most fun was getting her blonde pompadour sculpted.
The dog handler: What a great twist on the man servant role, a revamp of the old Igor. I kept the hunch back and the stance that makes it look like he has a loose rein on the beasts. His face was kept dumb and distance, just like the painting.
The dog hounds of the castle: I do like the mix the artist put in with these two. The dogs look part dragon and part dog. I kept the general positions and facial features. I looked closer from the body to the tusks and it looks like they were done with just a few paint strokes. Some of the detail was put in shadow so I took some liberty with the face and paws/claws.
The base was remade twice to custom fit the figures on so that when viewed from the front , it lines up perfect reimage of the original painting. The whole model diorama was done with metal parts and grey sculpty.
